You can never have enough baskets!

When my husband and I first moved into our house, it felt incredibly bare. Now, 10+ years, 1 dog and 2 kids later…it feels like our stuff is overflowing and there’s a shortage of baskets to keep everything organized.

I wanted to design a basket pattern in several sizes so there would always be somewhere to put “stuff.” I really love these baskets and use them all throughout my house.

These sturdy round crochet baskets are useful and stylish. They work up really quickly and are made with only basic crochet stitches.

The free pattern includes step-by-step written instructions as well as a video tutorial for making small, medium and large crochet baskets.

These round baskets also make a wonderful housewarming gift. Or, you can make one for a parent-to-be. I was pregnant, I received a store-bought basket filled with diapers. It was a lovely and very appreciated gift but imagine how thoughtful it would be if the basket was homemade.

The sides of the baskets are made with the Moss Stitch, which is a very easy stitch. It’s one of my favorite stitches and I’ve used it in my Moss Stitch Purse Pattern, Table Runner Pattern, and Easy Bookmark Pattern, just to name a few.

The Moss Stitch creates a classic-looking basket with lots of support so the sides aren’t too wobbly. It helps too that the pattern uses two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern, which creates a thick, dense fabric.

Pattern Details (Size, Yarn, Hook & Notes)

Size

The pattern includes instructions for three sizes of baskets:

• Small: 5” wide and 2.25” high
• Medium: 8” wide and 4” high
• Large: 12” wide and 5.5” high

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern. You can either use two skeins or separate your yarn manually. You will need approximately: 

• For the small size basket: 2 skeins of 50 yds / 22 g (100 yds / 44 g in total) 
• For the medium size basket: 2 skeins of 115 yds / 50 g (230 yds / 100 g in total)
• For the large size basket: 2 skeins of 235 yds / 105 g (470 yds / 210 g in total) 

I used Bernat Super Value in the color “Topaz.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 440 yds / 402 m and 7 oz / 197 g. Two skeins of this yarn can make all three sizes. 

Crochet Hook Size: K/10.5 (6.50 mm).

Other Materials: 2 stitch markers, yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. 

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• st = stitch
• sts = stitches 
• sl st = slip stitch 
• sc = single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet 
• Ch-1 sp = chain one space
• RS = right side 
• WS = wrong side
• Sm = small size basket
• Med = medium size basket
• Lg = large size basket 

Gauge

After Round 3 of the basket bottom, work should measure 3.75” across. Exact sizing is not important. 

Pattern Notes

• Use two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern, treating them as one strand and crocheting normally. 
• Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain) unless instructed otherwise. 
• Chains never count as stitches.

How to Crochet the Moss Stitch Baskets (Pattern Instructions)

Basket Bottom

Start (All Sizes): With two strands of yarn held together, make a Magic Circle. Continue to use two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern.

Round 1 (All Sizes): Ch 1. In the Magic Circle, make 10 hdc. Pull the end of Magic Circle tight to close. (10 sts made. Reminder: chains never count as sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

Round 2 (All Sizes): Ch 1. Do not turn. (Reminder: always work in the first stitch unless instructed otherwise). Make 2 hdc in each st around. (20 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

Round 3 (All Sizes): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. In the next st, hdc.* Repeat from * to * around. (30 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

After Round 3, work should measure 3.75” across (measurements are provided throughout the pattern as references and don’t need to be exact). 

Round 4 (All Sizes): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

After Round 4, work should measure 5” across. 

Small Size: Do not fasten off. Begin basket sides. 

Round 5 (Med & Lg): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (50 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

Round 6 (Med & Lg): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 4 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (60 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

Round 7 (Med & Lg): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 5 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (70 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

After Round 7, work should measure 8.25” across. 

Medium Size: Do not fasten off. Begin basket sides.

Round 8 (Lg): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 6 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (80 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

Round 9 (Lg): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 7 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (90 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

Round 10 (Lg): Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 8 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (100 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join. 

After Round 10, work should measure 12” across.

Large size: Do not fasten off. Begin basket sides. 

Basket Sides

The round numbers will now reset to make it easier to count rounds from the bottom up.

Note: The right side (the top) of the bottom you just completed will continue to face up.

Round 1 (All Sizes): Ch 1 and turn. For this round, your first stitch is the top of the last hdc you completed in the previous round (not the sl st that is attached to the chain). Sc in the back loops only (the loops furthest away from you) of each st around. (Stitch count: Sm: 40, Med: 70, Lg: 100). Sl st into both loops of the top of the first sc made in the round to join. 

In the next round, you will be creating ch-1 spaces that you will work into on the following round. You will sometimes be skipping a stitch and sometimes working in the next stitch. This is to ensure the basket sides stand up straight and don’t cave in. Anytime you chain 1, you are creating a ch-1 space regardless of whether you skip the next stitch or work in the next stitch. 

Round 2 (All Sizes) (RS): Ch 1. Do not turn. Skip the first st (the stitch attached to the ch). Sc in the next st. Place a stitch marker in the top of that first sc made.

Ch 1. Sc in the next st. 

[Ch 1. Sk the next st. Sc in the next st.] x 2 (this means to complete the instructions in brackets a total of two times). 

Ch 1. Sc in the next st. 

Ch 1. Sk the next st. Sc in the next st. 

*Ch 1. Sk the next st. Sc in the next st.

Ch 1. Sc in the next st.

[Ch 1. Sk the next st. Sc in the next st.] x 2

Ch 1. Sc in the next st.

Repeat from * to * around. 

Stitch count (only count sc sts not chains or spaces):  

Sm: 24 sc sts, Med: 42 sc sts, Lg: 60 sc sts.

Ch 1. Sl st into first ch-1 sp made in the round (the space between the first/starting ch-1 and the sc with the stitch marker) to join. Do not remove the stitch marker. 

From now on, you will turn after each round. On wrong side (WS) rounds, the inside of your work will be facing you. On the right side (RS) rounds, the outside of your work will be facing you.

Round 3 (All Sizes) (WS): Ch 1 and turn. In the first ch-1 sp (the sp between the turning chain and the last sc completed in the previous round), sc. Place a new stitch marker in the top of the first sc made.

*Ch 1. In the next ch-1 sp, sc.* Repeat from * to * around.

Your last sc is in the last ch-1 sp (the space with the stitch marker from the previous round does not get worked into).

Stitch count (only count sc sts not chains or spaces):  

Sm: 24 sc sts, Med: 42 sc sts, Lg: 60 sc sts.

You can now remove the stitch marker from the previous round (keep the stitch marker from the first stitch in this round in place). 

Ch 1. Sl st into the first ch-1 sp made in the round (the space been the first ch-1 and the sc with the stitch marker) to join. Do not remove the stitch marker from the first stitch.

Repeat Round 3 until you reach your desired height (the exact number of rounds I completed for each size are listed below). End after completing a RS row (an even number row). After reaching your desired height, fasten off and weave in loose ends. 

Round 4 (All Sizes) (RS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 5 (All Sizes) (WS): Repeat Round 3. 

Round 6 (All Sizes) (RS): Repeat Round 3. 

After Round 6, sides should measure 2.25” high.

Small Size: fasten off and weave in all loose ends. 

Round 7 (Med & Lg) (WS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 8 (Med & Lg) (RS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 9 (Med & Lg) (WS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 10 (Med & Lg) (RS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 11 (Med & Lg) (WS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 12 (Med & Lg) (RS): Repeat Round 3.

After Round 12, sides should measure 4” high.

Medium Size: fasten off and weave in all loose ends. 

Round 13 (Lg) (WS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 14 (Lg) (RS): Repeat Round 3.

Round 15 (Lg) (WS): Repeat Round 3. 

Round 16 (Lg) (RS): Repeat Round 3.

After Round 16, sides should measure 5.5” high.

Large Size: fasten off and weave in all loose ends. 

And now you have a new basket!
