Pattern Details

Skill Level

Easy to Intermediate – the blanket body is very easy. The border may be a tad challenging for absolute beginners but there is a step-by-step video tutorial along with the written pattern and photo tutorial.

Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 30” (76 cm) high x 40” (102 cm) wide.

The blanket is made from the chain row up, meaning that the chain row is what determines the width of the blanket and the number of rows determine the height. To make the width of the blanket bigger or smaller, adjust the number of starting chains in the multiples of 2 (meaning that your number of starting chains should be an even number). To make the height of the blanket bigger or smaller, make fewer or more rows. 

Gauge

4″ x 4″ = 15 stitches and 12 rows (following the pattern for the blanket body)

Materials

Yarn: I used Bernat Baby Sport in Baby Blue – the economical big ball size. This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 1256 yds / 1148 m and 12.3 oz / 350 g. I used one and a quarter skeins.

You can substitute with your favorite size 3 (light) yarn. You will need approx. 1500 yds / 1372 m. Note: if you substitute yarn, the size of your blanket and the amount of yarn required may be slightly different.

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm) – you may want to go up a hook size for the chain and/or use a different size hook to obtain gauge (which is not mandatory). 

Other Materials: scissors, yarn needle, measuring tape (optional)

Pattern Instructions

Blanket Body

Please note: If you crochet tightly, you may want to go up a hook size for the starting chains to ensure you can work more easily into the back ridge loop on Row 1. 

Start: Chain 130 for a blanket that is 40” wide (or however long you would like to make the width in multiples of 2 – meaning to make the number of starting chains an even number).

Row 1: In the 2nd ch from hook, sc into the back ridge loop (crocheting in the back ridge loops will ensure when you do the border, there won’t be large gaps. See pic above or learn more here). In the next ch, sc into the back ridge loop. Continue to sc into the back ridge loop of every ch. (129 sts). Ch 1 and turn. 

(Work in both loops from now on)

Row 2: Sc into the 1st st – the st attached to the ch. Dc into the same st. Sk the next st. *Sc into the next st. Dc into the same st. Sk the next st * Repeat from * to * across row until the last st. Sc into the last st. (129 sts). Ch 1 and turn. 

Row 3: Sc into the 1st st – the st attached to the ch (which is the last sc from the previous row). Dc into the same st. Sk the next st. *Sc into the next st (which is the next sc from the previous row). Dc into the same st. Sk the next st.* Repeat from * to * across row until the last st. Sc into the last st. (129 sts). Ch 1 and turn. 

Row 4 and on: Repeat Row 3 until your rows measure approx. 26.5” or 67 cm (approximately 88 rows in total) or your desired height. All Rows will have the same number of stitches. Do not fasten off. 

Blanket Border

The ribbed border is 1.75″ from the edge of the blanket. To make the ribbed border smaller or larger, decrease or increase the number of chains on Step 2. 

Border Step 1 – Foundation Row:

Note: On each side there must be an even number of stitches before the corner.  The instructions include where to make an extra stitch if necessary.

(Ensure that you have chained 1 and turned). Sc in each st across top until the last st. Count your stitches across the row (not including ch 1). If there are an odd number of sts, sc again into the same st as your last sc.

At the corner, sc three times into the corner stitch. Sc evenly down the side (crochet into the gap space at the end of each row) until the last space/corner st. Count your stitches down the side (not including the 3 sc in the corner). If there are an odd number of sts, sc again into the same space as your last sc.

At the bottom left corner st, sc three times into corner st. Sc in each st across the bottom until the last st. Count your stitches across the row. If there are an odd number of sts, sc into the same st as your last sc.

At the bottom right corner, sc three times into corner st. Sc evenly up the side (crochet into the gap space at the end of each row) until the last space/corner st. Count your stitches up the side (not including the 3 sc in the corner). If there are an odd number of sts, sc into the same space as your last sc.

At the corner, sc three times into corner st. Sl st into 1st sc to join. 

Border Step 2 – Ribbing Beginning: Ch 9. In the 2nd ch from hook, sc into the back ridge loop.

Sc into each of the back ridge loops. You will have created 8 sc sts in total. Sl st into the 1st sc made on the blanket body (the same st you slip stitched into to join – the st attached to the chain). Do not turn. Sl st into the next st on the blanket body. (2 sl sts made). Ch 1 and turn. 

Border Ribbing Up: Skip over the ch 1 and the 2 slip stitches. In the 1st st, sc into the back loops only (BLO) which are the loops furthest away from you. Sc into the BLO of each st up. (8 sts in total). Ch 1 and turn. 

Important Note About Connecting the Ribbing Border to the Blanket Body: 

After completing the ribbing down (explained next), where you slip stitch and how many slip stitches you make to connect the ribbing border to the blanket body across the row from this point forward will determine the tightness and overall look of your border. 

My instructions state to make a sl st into the next st on the blanket body (not the st attached to the ribbing) AND to sl st into the following st as well. By making a 2nd sl st, you are essentially skipping a stitch so the border stretches more. However, depending on how tightly you crochet, you may find the 2nd sl st causes your border to stretch too much and be too tight. 

If you are finding the 2 sl sts are causing your border to be too tight, you can choose to only make 1 sl st (just ensure you are attaching the ribbing to the next st, not the st attached to the ribbing).

You can even alternate between 1 sl st and 2 sl sts across the row. Whatever works best for you!

The instructions for the border corner will be the same no matter how many sl sts you make, you would just have 1 sl st made before approaching the 2nd last st before the corner st instead of 2 and then make 1 sl st on the last step of corners 1, 2 & 3 instead of 2. 

Border Ribbing Down: Skip over the ch 1 and sc into the BLO of each st down. (The last st can be tricky to see as it can get quite tight. Always count your stitches). 8 sts in total. Sl st into the next st on the blanket body – not the stitch attached to the ribbing. Sl st into the next st on the blanket body (2 sl sts made). Ch 1 and turn. 

Work Ribbing Across: Repeat Border Ribbing Up and Border Ribbing Down all the way across the row until you get to the 2nd last st (the st before the corner st where you sc 3 times in the Border Step 1). 

Border Corners 1, 2 & 3

You should have just completed 2 sl sts as you approached the 2nd last st in the row. 

Rib Up: Ch 1 and turn, sk over the ch 1 and the 2 sl sts. Sc into the BLO of each st up (8 sts). Ch 1 and turn.  

Rib Down: Sk the ch 1 and sc into the BLO of each st down (8 sts). 

Sl st into the 2nd last st in the row. 

Repeat *Rib Up, Rib Down, sl st into the corner st* from * to * a total of 3 times. 

Rib Up, Rib Down, sl st into the next st. 

Rib Up, Rib Down and sl st into the next 2 sts. 

Work Ribbing Across: Repeat Border Ribbing Up and Border Ribbing Down all the way across until you get to the 2nd last st (the st before the corner st where you sc 3 times in the Border Step 1).

Repeat these instructions around blanket until the last corner (Border Corner 4). 

Border Corner 4

You should have just completed 2 sl sts as you approached the 2nd last st in the row. 

Rib Up: Ch 1 and turn, sk over the ch 1 and the 2 sl sts. Sc into the BLO of each st up (8 sts). Ch 1 and turn.  

Rib Down: Sk the ch 1 and sc into the BLO of each st down (8 sts). 

Sl st into the 2nd last st in the row. 

Repeat *Rib Up, Rib Down, sl st into the corner st* from * to * a total of 3 times. 

Repeat *Rib Up, Rib Down, sl st into last st* from * to * a total of 2 times. 

Assembling The Beginning and End of Border

After the 2nd sl st, move your yarn and hook to the back of your work and pull the beginning and end sides together like you are closing a book. From the back, line up the 8 sc on each side so they are even with each other. 

Starting with the 1st of 8 scs and working up, insert your hook into the back loop only of side closest to you and into the front loop only on the side furthest away and sl st. Repeat all the way up (8 sl sts). 

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends. 

And that’s it! Now you have a brand-new adorable baby blanket!
