The bag is made by holding two strands of yarn together, which creates a thick, dense fabric that’s sturdy and durable for everyday use. You can use any size 4 (medium) worsted-weight yarn, and the pattern works up quickly, making it a fun, fast, and satisfying project.

Pattern Details (Size, Yarn, Hook & Notes)

Skill Level

Easy

Size

The pattern creates a crochet bag that is approx. 11” high, 16” long and 4” deep with straps that are 10” away from the bag.

Bag sizing

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 860 yds in total of any worsted weight, size 4 (medium) yarn (the less stretchy the better). This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern so you can either separate your yarn manually or use multiple skeins. You will need 2 x 430 yds.

I used Pound of Love in the color “Olive.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% premium acrylic. A skein is 1020 yds / 932 m and 16 oz / 448 g.

Crochet Hook: K/10.5 (6.50 mm).

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape, a stitch marker and pins.

Gauge

4” x 4” = 7 sc and 13 rows (following the bag body pattern)

Pattern Notes

  • Use two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern, treating them as one strand and crocheting normally.
  • The tote bag is made from the bottom up. The bottom and body are worked in the round – never turn at the end of a round.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • Always work into the first stitch, the stitch attached to the chain. If the instructions for the beginning of the round say “next st,” work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
  • Always put a stitch marker in the top of the first single crochet stitch of every round to help ensure you start and end in the right place and you have the correct number of stitches.
  • If the instructions say “[2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.] x 2,” what this means is to complete the steps in brackets a total of two times (i.e. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.).

Body Round 3

Work after Round 3 should measure approx. 16” long and 1.5” high.

Round 4 and on: Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 consecutively until your work measures 11” high (approx. 32 rounds in total).

End after repeating a Round 2 (not a Round 3).

Once you’ve reached 11” high, fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Bag Straps

Start: With two strands of yarn held together, leave a 30” starting tail (for both strands). Using a K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook, chain 7.

Row 1: In the third ch from hook, sc. (Note: by working into the third ch, the first and second chains will be used as a “chain 2 space” (ch-2 sp) that you will work into on the next row). Ch 1. Sk next ch. Sc in next ch. (Ch-1 sp created). Ch 1. Sk the next ch. Sc in the last ch. (Ch-1 sp created). (3 sc sts).

Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Sc in the first ch-1 sp. (This creates a new ch-2 sp). Ch 1. Sc in the next ch-1 sp. (New ch-1 sp created). Ch 1. Sc into the ch-2 sp (this space can be tight and hard to see). (New ch-1 sp created). (3 sc sts).

Straps Row 1

Repeat Row 2 until your strap measures 40” long (approx. 114 rows). Fasten off, leaving a 30” tail (for both strands).

Make two straps.

Strap Placement

The straps go on the inside of the bag, 4” from the side, with the ends  1” from the bottom. There should be a height of approx. 10” from the top of the bag to the top of the straps.

Strap placement

Attaching the Straps

Turn bag inside out. Pin straps in place.

Using the 30” tails (one strand at a time) and yarn needle, attach strap to inside of tote bag body, only working into the backs of stitches to ensure yarn does not show through the front. Attach all around.

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
