Have you tried the waffle stitch before? It’s a truly gorgeous stitch and many crocheter’s favorite and go-to stitch for making blankets, dishcloths and more.

I completely understand the appeal. The waffle stitch creates a soft, squishy fabric that is beautifully textured.

Over the years, I’ve had many requests for a waffle stitch blanket pattern and I’m excited to share this pattern and tutorial with you.

At first glance, you may think it’s not easy because of the intricate result but it’s actually very simple. It’s a two-row repeat that is made with only two stitches. You’ll be amazed at how quick and easy it is to crochet!

This waffle stitch blanket pattern creates a delightful blanket that you can make as a baby blanket or as a lovely throw blanket.

It’s wonderful for babies who love to explore the little boxes that it creates and it’s great for their sensory development. Plus, there are no large gaps or holes for their little fingers to get stuck in, making it a perfect blanket for newborns. The geometric design makes it a top choice for a gender-neutral baby blanket.

Using size 3 (light) yarn for this pattern makes the blanket cozy and warm yet still lightweight and not too heavy. It also has an excellent drape and flows nicely.

Pattern Details

Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 30” x 30” (approx. 28” x 28” without the border). Instructions for adjusting the size are included in the pattern.

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 1,100 yds of any size 3 (light) yarn. I used Bernat Softee Baby in the color “Aqua.” This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 362 yds / 331 m and 5 oz / 140 g. I used 3 skeins (975 yds for the body and 125 yds for the border).

Crochet Hook Size: I/9 (5.50 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. 

Can I Use a Different Yarn Weight or Hook Size?

This pattern was designed using size 3 (light) yarn and an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook. You are welcome to try different yarn weights as well as hook sizes but the overall look, feel and size of the blanket as well as the amount of yarn required may be different. 

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

• ch/chs = chain/chains
• st/sts = stitch/stitches
• sl st = slip stitch 
• sc = single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet 
• FPdc = front post double crochet
• RS = right side (front)
• WS = wrong side (back)

Gauge

4” x 4” = 14 sts and 10 rows  following the pattern.

Pattern Notes

• Chains never count as stitches.

Does it Look the Same on Both Sides?

The blanket looks different (yet still lovely!) on each side.

How to Adjust the Size

You can adjust the width by making more or less starting chains in multiples of 3 + 2 (meaning to take any number that you can divide by 3 and add 2 to that number). To adjust the height, make more or less rows.

As a guideline: 102 sts = 28“ wide, which means there are approx. 3.6 stitches in an inch. You can take the width you want your blanket to be (in inches) and multiply it by 3.6 (for example, if you want your blanket to be approx. 100” wide, 100 x 3.6 = 360). Round up to the nearest multiple of 3 and add 2 to that number. For this example, 360 is a multiple of 3 so no need to round up and then add 2 = 362. So, you would need 362 starting chains to make the blanket approx. 100” wide. (This is a rough estimate and has not been tested but should give you a width that is close to what you want it to be). 

Stitch Explanation

This pattern includes a front post double crochet stitch. If this stitch is new to you, here is how to do it:

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) = Yarn over, insert your hook from the front to the back at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (2 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the last two loops on your hook.

When making a front post double crochet stitch, only work around the post of the stitch from below and leave the top of the stitch unworked.

How to Crochet the Waffle Stitch Blanket

Blanket Body Instructions

Start: Ch 104.

For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops.

Row 1 (WS): In the third ch from the hook, dc. 

Dc in each ch across. (102 sts).

Row 2 (RS): Ch 2 and turn. 

In the first st (the st attached to the ch-2), dc. 

*FPdc around the next st. 

Dc in the next 2 sts.* 

Repeat from * to * across until there are 2 sts left.

FPdc around the next (second last) st. 

In the last st, dc. 

(102 sts. Reminder: chs never count as sts.).

Row 3 (WS): Ch 2 and turn. 

In the first st (the st attached to the ch-2), dc. 

*Dc in the next st. 

FPdc around the next 2 sts.* 

Repeat from * to * across until there are 2 sts left. 

Dc in the last 2 sts. 

(102 sts). 

Row 4 and on: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 consecutively until the height of your blanket is 0.5” away from matching the width if you want a square blanket (for me, that was 27.5” high). Or, 0.5” away from your desired height. 

Finish the blanket body by repeating Row 2. (My completed blanket body was 28” high and 66 rows). Do not fasten off. Begin the blanket border.

Blanket Border Instructions

Ensure you have just finished a repeat of Row 2.

Border Round 1 (RS): Ch 1. Do not turn.

SIDE (DOWN) – Working down the side, sc evenly down, working into the sts at the end of each row (not into spaces).

Need help with where to work into? When working into a dc st at the end of a row, work 1 sc into the top of that dc st and 1 sc into the bottom. When working into a ch-2, make 1 sc. Exact st placement and st count are not important. The goal is to have evenly-spaced sc sts down (and up) the side.

BOTTOM – In the first ch across the bottom, make 3 sc (first corner made). Sc in each ch across until there is 1 ch left. In the last ch, make 3 sc (second corner made).

SIDE (UP) – Working up the side, sc evenly up, working into the sts at the end of the row, not into spaces (same as the other side).

TOP – In the first st across the top, make 3 sc (third corner made). Sc in each st across the top until there is 1 st left. In the last st, make 3 sc (fourth corner made).

Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

For Border Rounds 2 – 4, the instructions refer to the “corner st.” The corner st is the middle sc st of the 3 sc sts made in the corner in the previous round. 

Border Round 2 (WS): Ch 1 and turn.

Sk the st attached to the ch (this is the sl st that joined the previous round. This joining sl st never gets worked into). 

Sc in the next st. 

In the next st, make 3 sc (first corner made). 

*Sc in each st until the next corner st.

In the corner st, make 3 sc.*

Complete the instructions from * to * a total of 3 times. 

Sc in each st until back at the first st made in the round.

Sl st into the top of the first sc to join. 

Border Round 3 (RS): Ch 1 and turn. 

Sk the st attached to the ch.

*Sc in each st until the next corner st.

In the corner st, make 3 sc.*

Complete the instructions from * to * a total of 4 times. 

Sc in the next 2 sts. 

Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Border Round 4 (RS): Ch 1. Do not turn.

For Border Round 4 (only), sl st VERY loosely as you will work into the sl sts on the next round.

In the first st (the st attached to the ch), hdc. 

In the next st, sl st.

[*In the next st, hdc.

In the next st, sl st.*

Repeat from * to * until the corner st. 

If your last st before the corner st is an hdc, make a sl st in the same st (so your last st before the corner will be (hdc, sl st) in the same st). 

In the corner st, make (hdc, sl st, hdc) in the same st.

In the next st, sl st.]

Complete the instructions from [ to ] a total of 4 times.

*In the next st, hdc.

In the next st, sl st.*

Repeat from * to * until back at the first hdc made in the round. 

If your last st (before the first hdc made in the round) is an hdc, make a sl st in the same st (so your last st will be (hdc, sl st) in the same st).

Sl st (normally, not loosely) in the top of the first hdc made in the round to join. 

Your work may curl during Round 4 but will straighten out after the next round. 

Border Round 5 (WS): Ch 1 and turn.

Sk the st attached to the ch. 

[*In the next st (the top of the sl st from the previous round), hdc. 

In the next st (the top of the hdc from the previous round), sl st.* (Sl st normally (not loosely) from now on).

Repeat from * to * until the corner st.

In the corner st, make (hdc, sl st, hdc) in the same st.

In the next st, sl st.]

Complete the instructions from [ to ] a total of 4 times.

Repeat from * to * until back at the first hdc made in the round.
