When Charlie turned 8 years old, I asked my (then) five year old what we should get Charlie for his birthday and she suggested a fancy new bandana. Brilliant! And so I designed this paw-tern and I think it makes a paw-some crochet birthday gift for a dog!

I think the crochet dog bow tie is the absolute cutest thing. In my journey designing crochet patterns, this pattern has been a real high point as I see pictures of dogs wearing their new bandanas, looking so proud in their bow ties! I would absolutely love to see your dog wearing his or her new crochet tuxedo dog bandana!

• It’s a great crochet project (or gift idea) for beginners as the pattern only uses simple stitches…if you know how to half double crochet, single crochet, double crochet, chain and slip stitch you can make this Tuxedo Crochet Dog Bandana!
• It’s quick – you can make it in a short time and it uses only a small amount of yarn (less than a quarter of a skein in total).

Size

Finished Tuxedo Dog Bandana, using the yarn listed below and a H/8 (5.00mm) hook, is 8″ high (from top of collar to bottom of lowest point of triangle) and the widest part (the top row) of the triangle is 8.5″ wide.

Finished collar size is 34″ long and 1.25″ wide. Instructions for adjusting the size of the collar are included below.

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn.

What I used:

• Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn, Solid. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. The size is 4.5 oz / 127.5 g. A skein is 285 yd./260m and you only need less than a quarter skein in total. 
• I used the color “White” for the main white part of the bandana and the color “Black” for the collar, the border and bow tie.

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00mm).

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape, black thread, sewing needle and two small (approx 1 cm) black buttons

Terminology

Pattern Notes

• The collar is made separately. The triangle part of the bandana, once completed, is sewn onto the collar.
• The bow tie is also made separately and then sewn onto the bandana.
• The triangle part of the Tuxedo Dog Bandana is worked from the bottom up.
• Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
• Always start in the same stitch as the chain.
• The bandana curves – that was part of the design and is not meant to be completely flat.

Collar Sizing

The collar of the bandana is made separately from the triangle part of the bandana. The triangle part, once completed, is sewn onto the center of the collar.

The collar’s ends tie up around the dog’s neck so the sizing doesn’t need to be exact. I found that a 34″ collar ties up nicely around most medium and large size dogs.

To create a collar that is 34″ long, which should fit a medium and large size dog, follow the pattern below.

If you want to make your collar smaller or larger, subtract or add starting chains + 1. For reference, 113 chains of worsted weight yarn makes a collar that is 34″ long.

Pattern Instructions

Collar

With black yarn and a H/8 (5.00 mm) hook, ch 113.

Row 1: In the 2nd ch from hook, sc into back ridge loop (Interweave has a great diagram of where the back ridge loop is here or you can watch this video tutorial). sc into back ridge loops of each ch across. (112 sts)

Row 2 – 5: ch 1 and turn. sc in each st across (112 sts).

Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Your finished collar should be approximately 34″ long and 1.25″ wide.

Bandana (Triangle Part)

With white colored yarn and a H/8 (5.00 mm) hook, ch 2.

Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, 2 hdc in same st. (2 sts).

Row 2: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in each st across. (4 sts)

Row 3: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in each st across. (8 sts)

Row 4: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (8 sts)

Row 5: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in next st. hdc in next 6 sts. 2 hdc in next st. (10 sts)

Row 6: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (10 sts)

Row 7: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in next 2 sts. hdc in next 6 sts. 2 hdc in next 2 sts. (14 sts)

Row 8: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (14 sts)

Row 9: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in next st. hdc in next 12 sts. 2 hdc in next st. (16 sts)

Row 10: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (16 sts).

Row 11: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in next st. hdc in next 14 sts. 2 hdc in next st. (18 sts).

Row 12: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (18 sts)

Row 13: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in next 2 sts. hdc in next 14 sts. 2 hdc in next 2 sts. (22 sts)

Row 14: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (22 sts)

Row 15: ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc in next st. hdc in next 20 sts. 2 hdc in next st. (24 sts)

Row 16: ch 1 and turn. hdc in each st across. (24 sts)

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Border

With a H/8 (5.00 mm) hook, attach black yarn to the top right corner st (where you just fastened off) with a sl st (that does not count as a st).

Round 1: Sc evenly around:

• working down the side towards the bottom of triangle, sc into each row (into the gaps) for a total of 16 sc (16 sts).
• at the bottom st, 3 sc into same st (3 sc made in bottom st)
• working up the side towards the towards the top, sc into each row (into the gaps) for a total of 16 sc (16 sts)
• at the corner st, 3 sc into same st (3 sc made in corner st)
• working across top, sc in each st across (22 sts).
• when back at the st where you joined the black yarn, 2 sc into same st.

Sl st into top of 1st sc to join. Do not fasten off.

Round 2: ch 2. Do not turn. 2 dc in next 4 sts. dc in next 2 sts. 2 hdc in next 3 sts. hdc in next 2 sts. 2 sc in next 2 sts. sc in next 4 sts. 3 sc into next st (the very bottom st). sc in next 4 sts. 2 sc in next 2 sts. hdc in next 2 sts. 2 hdc in next 3 sts. dc in next 2 sts. 2 dc in next 5 sts. sl st into next st. sc in next st and in each st across.

Sl st in top of 1st dc to join. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Bow Tie

With black yarn and an H/8 (5.00 mm) hook, ch 11.

Row 1: In the 3rd ch from hook, dc. dc in each st across (9 sts).

Row 2 – 7: ch 1 and turn. dc in each st across (9 sts).

Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Bow Tie Assembly

1) Pinch the middle of the bow as far as it can go.

2) With black yarn, tightly wrap around the middle of the bow over and over again and spread out the wrapped yarn so that it covers an 1″ inch.

3) Fasten off by weaving in the end into the back of the wrapping. Cut and leave a 12″ tail to attach to the bandana. Weave in the loose end that started the wrapping.

Attach the bow in between rows 12 & 13 of the bandana in the middle.

Sew on Buttons

With black thread and a sewing needle, attach the buttons to the middle of the bandana.

• Attach one button in between rows 4 & 5.
• Attach the other button in between rows 8 & 9.

Attaching the Collar

Place the bandana so that it is centered on top of the collar and the ends of the collar are of equal length on either side.

Line up the collar and the bandana so that the tops are aligned. The bandana should cover the collar completely so you won’t see the collar from the front.

Step 1: With a yarn needle and a new strand of black yarn, attach yarn at the furthest right st of the top row of the bandana.

Step 2: Sew along the top rows of both pieces across.

Step 3: Work down, sewing the collar to the border of the bandana. When you get to the last row of the collar, work up.

Step 4: Sew along the 2nd rows from top, ensuring that your weaving in and out doesn’t come through the front of the white part of the bandana.

Step 5: Repeat Step 3. Fasten off and weave in ends.
