Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 36” x 36 with the border (31” x 31” without the border). Instructions for adjusting the size are included in the pattern.

Materials

Any size 6 (super bulky) yarn. You will need approx. 550 yds in total (370 yds for the blanket body and 180 yds for the border).

I used Bernat Blanket yarn in the color “Misty Green.” This yarn is size 6 (super bulky) and 100% polyester. A skein is 220 yds / 201 m and 10.5 oz / 300 g). I used 3 skeins (2.5 to be exact). 

Crochet Hook Size: M/13 (9.00 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers and a measuring tape. 

Can I Use a Different Yarn Weight or Hook Size?

This pattern was designed using size 6 (super bulky) yarn and a M/13 (9.00 mm) hook. You are welcome to try different yarn weights as well as hook sizes but the overall look, feel and size of the blanket as well as the amount of yarn required may be different. 

If using a different yarn weight, I really wish I could tell you which hook size to use, how many starting chains are required to make it a specific size and/or how much yarn is required but I’ve only designed, made and tested this pattern with size 6 (super bulky) yarn and an M/13 hook and I wouldn’t want to give you inaccurate information. 

If you are going to try a different yarn weight or hook size, I recommend making a small swatch. You can make any number of starting chains in multiples of 2 (meaning that you should have an even number of starting chains) and then follow the pattern.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

• ch/chs = chain/chains
• st/sts = stitch/stitches
• sk = skip
• sl st = slip stitch 
• sc = single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet 
• RS = right side (front)
• WS = wrong side (back)
• BLO = back loop only

Gauge

Exact sizing is not important. For reference, 4” x 4” = 7 sts and 5 rows following the pattern for the blanket body.  

How to Adjust the Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 36” x 36” with the border (31” x 31” without the border). 

The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 2 (meaning you need to have an even number of starting chains). To adjust the height, make more or less rows (ensure you end after completing a repeat of Row 3). 

As a guideline: 54 sts = 31“ wide, which means there are approx. 1.75 stitches in an inch. You can take the width you want your blanket to be (in inches) and multiply it by 1.75 (for example, if you want your blanket to be approx. 100” wide, 100 x 1.75 = 175). Round up to the nearest multiple of 2. In this example, you would round up to 176. So, you would need 176 starting chains to make the blanket approx. 100” wide. (This is a rough estimate and has not been tested but should give you a width that is close to what you want it to be). 

Pattern Notes

• Chains never count as stitches. 

Is this Blanket Reversible?

The front of the blanket body looks different from the back of the blanket. The blanket border looks the same on both sides.

How to Crochet the Super Bulky Blanket

Blanket Body Instructions

Start: Ch 56.

Row 1 (RS): In the third ch from the hook, dc. 

Dc in each ch across. 

(54 dc sts).

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 and turn. 

In the first st (the st attached to the ch), sl st. 

In the next st, hdc.

*In the next st, sl st. In the next st, hdc.*

Repeat from * to * across. 

(54 sts: 27 sl sts and 27 hdc sts). 

Row 3 (RS): Ch 2 and turn.

In the first st (the st attached to the ch), dc.

Dc in each st across.

(54 dc sts). 

Row 4 and on: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 consecutively until the height of your blanket body matches the width (for a square blanket) or until you reach your desired height. Ensure you finish the blanket body after completing a repeat of Row 3. (The height of my completed blanket body was 31” and I made 39 rows).  Do not fasten off. Begin the blanket border. 

Blanket Border Instructions

Ensure you have just finished a repeat of Row 3. 

Border Round 1 (RS): Ch 1. Do not turn.

SIDE (DOWN): Sc evenly down the side. 

When working down (and up) and the sides, you can work into 1 loop or 2. The exact st count/st placement is not important. The goal is to have evenly spaced out sc sts down (and up) the side.

Need help with where to work into down the side? When you see a dc, work 1 sc in the top and 1 sc in the bottom of that dc. When you see a ch-1, work 1 sc into/near that ch-1. 

BOTTOM:

In the first ch across the bottom, make 3 sc (first corner made). 

Sc in each ch across the bottom until there is 1 ch left.

In the last ch, make 3 sc (second corner made).

SIDE (UP): Sc evenly up the side. 

Need help with where to work into up the side? When you see a ch-2, work 1 sc into/near the top and 1 sc into/near the bottom of that ch-2. When you see a hdc, work 1 sc in that hdc.

TOP: In the first st across the top, make 3 sc (third corner made). 

Sc in each st across the top until there is 1 st left.

In the last st, make 3 sc (fourth corner made). 

Sl st into the first sc made in the round to join.

Place Stitch Markers:

To help prepare for the corners in the next round, place stitch markers in the four corner sts. The corner st is the middle of 3 sc sts made in each corner in Border Round 1.

Border Round 2 – Border Ribbing:

Step 1: Do not turn (The RS/front should be facing you). Ch 5. (Making 5 chs creates a ribbed border that is approx. 2.5” away from the blanket body. To adjust the size, make more or less chs – there is no specific multiple required). 

In the second ch from the hook, sc. In each ch, sc. (4 sc sts made). Sl st into the first st on the blanket body, the st attached to the chs. Sl st into the next st on the blanket body (2 sl sts made).

Ribbing Up: Ch 1 and turn. Sk the 2 sl sts. In the first st, sc into the back loop only (BLO) which is the loop furthest away from you. Sc into the BLO of each st. (4 sc sts made).

Important Note About Connecting the Ribbing Border to the Blanket Body: 

When completing the Border Ribbing Down, the instructions state: “Sk the st on the blanket body that is attached to the ribbing. Sl st into the next 2 sts on the blanket body.”

If you find making 2 sl sts is causing your border to be too tight/stretched or too slanted, you can make more or less sl sts. You can even alternate the number of sl sts (i.e. make 1 sl st, then rib up and rib down and make 2 sl sts). Just ensure you are attaching the ribbing to the next st on the blanket body, not the st on the blanket body that is attached to the ribbing.

When you get to a corner, follow the pattern instructions for how many sl sts to make in each corner.

Ribbing Down: Ch 1 and turn. In the BLO of the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc. Sc in the BLO of each st. (4 sc sts made. Note: the last st can be tricky to see as it can get quite tight. Always count your sts). Sk the st on the blanket body that is attached to the ribbing. Sl st into the next 2 sts on the blanket body. 

Repeat Ribbing Until Corner: Repeat ribbing up and ribbing down until the st before the corner st. 

Border Corners: When you arrive at the st (on the blanket body) before the corner st (on the blanket body), (after ribbing down) sl st into the st before the corner st (it’s okay if it’s your first sl st or second sl st). Remove the stitch marker from the corner st. 

[Ribbing Up:Ch 1 and turn. Sk the sl st(s). Sc into the BLO of each st up (4 sc sts). 

Ribbing Down: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in the BLO of each st down (4 sc sts).

Sl st into the corner st (on the blanket body).]

Complete the instructions from [ to ] a total of 3 times.

After your third sl st into the corner st (on the blanket body), complete ribbing up and ribbing down. Sl st into the next st on the blanket body.

Continue Ribbing: Resume ribbing up and ribbing down until the st before the next corner. (Reminder: after ribbing down, sk the st on the blanket body attached to the ribbing. Sl st in the next 2 sts on the blanket body). 

At the next corner, follow the Border Corners instructions. Continue ribbing (and following the border corner instructions) all the way around. 

End of Border: After the last (fourth) corner (you will have just made a sl st in the last st), complete ribbing up and ribbing down and sl st into the same/last st on the blanket body (you will now have 2 sl sts in the last st).  

Finishing: Fasten off, leaving a 24” tail. Pull the tail through the loop that was on your hook. With your yarn needle and using the ladder stitch, sew the start and end (of Round 2) together: 

A) Pull the yarn, from in to out, through both loops of the first ch (on your left).

B) Pull the yarn, from out to in, through both loops of the next (second) ch. 

C) Pull the yarn, from in to out, through the outer loop only (the loop on your right) of the first sc (on your right). 

D) Pull the yarn, from out to in, through the outer loop of the next (second) sc. 

E) Pull the yarn, from in to out, through both loops of the next (third) ch. 

F) Pull the yarn, from out to in, through both loops of the last (fourth) ch. 

G) Pull the yarn, from in to out, through the outer loop of the next (third) sc. 

H) Pull the yarn, from out to in, through the outer loop of the last (fourth) sc. 

I) Pull the yarn, from in to out, through the last ch. (I joined the last sts on each side one extra time to help ensure an even top). 

Weave in all loose ends. 

And now you have a new super bulky blanket!
