Size
The pattern creates a coaster that is approx. 5.5” across.
Materials
Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. For each coaster, you will need approx. 5 yds of brown yarn, 10 yds of yellow yarn and 15 yds of green yarn.
I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the colors “Chocolate Brown” (brown), “Sunny Day” (yellow) and “Deep Forest” (green). This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Crochet Hook Size: G/7 (4.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sp = space
- sk = skip
- YO = yarn over
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- tr = triple/treble crochet
- dc2tog = double crochet two together
- dc3tog = double crochet three together
- tr2tog = triple crochet two together
- ch-1 sp = chain one space
- ch-2 sp = chain two space
Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, after Round 2, work should measure approx. 3.5” across.
Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- This pattern is made in the round. Never turn at the start/end of a round.
- Your work may curl during the first few rounds but will lay flat after Round 4.

Stitch Explanations
In case any of these stitches are new to you:
Triple/Treble Crochet (tr):
YO twice and insert your hook into the magic circle. YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (3 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (2 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through the two loops on your hook.
Double Crochet Two Together (dc2tog):
YO. Insert your hook into the designated st. YO and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook (2 loops on your hook). YO and insert your hook into the same st. YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed dc2tog counts as 1 st.
Double Crochet Three Together (dc3tog):
YO. Insert your hook into the designated st. YO and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook (2 loops on your hook). YO and insert your hook into the same st. YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on your hook). YO and insert your hook into the same st. YO and pull through a loop (5 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 4 loops on your hook. This completed dc3tog counts as 1 st.
Triple/Treble Crochet Two Together (tr2tog)
YO twice. Insert your hook into the designated st. YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (2 loops on hook). YO twice and insert your hook into the same st. YO and pull through a loop (5 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (4 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed tr2tog counts as 1 st.

How to Crochet the Sunflower Coasters (Pattern Instructions)
Start: With brown yarn, make a Magic Circle.
Continue using brown yarn for Round 1.
Round 1: Ch 2.
Make 16 tr into the Magic Circle.
(16 tr sts. Reminder: chs never count as sts.).
Pull the Magic Circle tight to close.
Sl st into the top of the first tr st to join.
Fasten off brown yarn (meaning to cut the yarn from the skein and pull the end/tail through the loop that was on your hook).
Round 2: Reminder: never turn. Attach yellow yarn: insert your hook into the first st, place the yellow yarn on your hook and pull it through the st.
Ch 2.
In the same (first) st, dc2tog.
Ch 2. In the next st, tr2tog.
*Ch 2. In the next st, dc3tog.
Ch 2. In the next st, tr2tog.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(1 dc2tog + 8 tr2tog + 7 dc3tog = 16 sts).
Ch 2.
Sl st into the top of the first (dc2tog) st to join.
Fasten off yellow yarn.


Round 3: Attach green yarn: insert your hook into the first ch-2 sp, place the green yarn on your hook and pull it through the sp. Continue using green for the rest of the pattern.
Ch 1.
In the same (first) ch-2 sp, make 3 hdc.
*Ch 1. In the next ch-2 sp, make 3 hdc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(48 hdc sts).
Ch 1.
Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

Round 4: Ch 1.
Sk the first st (the st attached to the ch).
In the next st, sc.
Ch 2.
In the second ch from the hook (in the top loop), sl st.
In the same st (as your last sc), sc.
Ch 1.
Sk the next st.
(Never work into any ch sts from the previous round).
Sl st into the next ch-1 sp.
*Ch 1.
Sk the next st.
In the next st, sc.
Ch 2.
In the second ch from the hook (in the top loop), sl st.
In the same st (as your last sc), sc.
Ch 1.
Sk the next st.
Sl st into the next ch-1 sp.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(32 sc sts).
Nothing special happens at the end of the round. Your last st is a sl st into the last ch-1 sp.

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

And now you have a new sunflower coaster!
