Size

The pattern creates a bookmark that is approx. 12” long. The heart measures approx. 3” wide and 3” long.

Materials

Yarn: Any size 3 (light) yarn. You will need approx. 15 yds for each bookmark.

I used Snuggly Wuggly by Loops & Threads in the colors “Fairy Tale,” “Soft Lilac,” “Pale Blue,” “Light Green” and “Yellow.” This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 446 yds / 408 m and 5 oz / 141 g.

Crochet Hook Size: F/5 (3.75 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. 

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

• ch/chs = chain/chains
• st/sts = stitch/stitches
• sl st = slip stitch 
• sc = single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet
• tr = triple/treble crochet

Measurements are provided throughout the pattern. Exact sizing is not important.

• Chains never count at stitches.
• This pattern is made in the round. Never turn at the start or end of any round. 
• Your work may curl during the first couple of rounds but will lay flat after the final round.

How to Crochet the Heart Bookmark (Pattern Instructions)

Start: Make a Magic Circle.

Round 1: 

Ch 1. Make the following stitches into the Magic Circle (in the order listed below):

Hdc.

3 tr.

Sl st.

3 tr.

2 hdc.

Tr.

Hdc. 

(Stitch count: 12 sts. Reminder: chs never count as sts). 

Pull the Magic Circle tight to close. 

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join (this sl st does not count as a st).

After Round 1, my heart measured approx. 1.5” wide (at the widest part) and 1” high (from the middle of the top to the bottom). Exact sizing is not important in this pattern. 

Round 2:

Ch 1.Don’t turn.

In the first st (the st attached to the ch), hdc. 

In the next st, 2 hdc. 

In the next st, 3 tr. 

In the next st, (dc, sc) in the same st. 

In the next st (the sl st from the previous round), sl st.

In the next st, (sc, dc) in the same st.

In the next st, 3 tr. 

In the next st, 2 hdc. 

In the next st, hdc. 

In the next st, 2 hdc. 

In the next st, (dc, tr, dc) in the same st.

In the last st, 3 hdc. 

(Stitch count: 25 sts). 

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join (this sl st does not count as a st).

After Round 2, my heart measured approx. 2.5” wide (at the widest part) and 2” high (from the middle of the top to the bottom).

Round 3:

Ch 1. Don’t turn.

In the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.

Sc in the next 3 sts. 

In the next st, 2 sc.

In the next st, 3 sc.

In the next st, 2 sc.

In the next st, sc.

In the next st (the sl st from the previous round), sl st.

In the next st, sc. 

In the next st, 2 sc.

In the next st, 3 sc.

In the next st, 2 sc.

Sc in the next 8 sts.

In the next st, 2 sc. 

Next, you will make a number of chs. Making 36 chs creates a “stem” that is approx. 7” long (away from the heart and measured after making sl sts in each ch). You can adjust the size of the stem by more or less chains in any number (there is no multiple required). 

Ch 36 (or any number of chs). 

In the second ch from the hook, sl st. 

Sl st into each ch all the way back to the heart (35 sl sts made). 

Working into the same st as the last 2 sc sts made in the heart (before making the chs), sc.

Sc in the next 3 sts (the last 3 sts of the round). 

(Stitch count: 35 sts on the heart and 35 sl sts made on the stem). 

Use the invisible joining technique to finish the round.

INVISIBLE JOIN TECHNIQUE:

1. After finishing the last stitch in the round, cut the yarn that’s attached to the skein, leaving an 8” long tail. 
2. Pull the tail through your last stitch (don’t worry, your work won’t come undone). 
3. Put the tail in the eye of your yarn needle.
4. Insert your yarn needle into both loops of the top of the first stitch made in the round and pull your tail through. 
5. Next, you’ll be working into the last stitch made in the round. Insert your yarn needle from top to bottom through the back loop of the last stitch. Insert your needle into the horizontal line on the back of that stitch (the small line that is parallel to the back loop). Pull the tail through both the back loop and the horizontal line on the back of the stitch. Be careful not to pull too tightly. 
6. The tail has now created two lines that connect the first and last stitches and it resembles a stitch. 
7. Still with your yarn needle, weave the tail into stitches on the back of your work, being careful not to pull too tight. Once the tail is secure and hidden, cut any remaining yarn. 

Weave in any other loose ends.

TASSEL:

Cut 4 strands of yarn that are 8” long.

A) Insert your hook in the first sl st made on the stem from the back to the front.

B) Take the strands of yarn, fold them in half and place them on your hook.

C) With your hook, pull the folded ends through stem (which creates a loop).

D) Pull the ends through the loop. 

E) Pull tight to make a knot. 

Trim the strands so that they are 2” long (from the knot). 

And now you have a new heart bookmark!
