Unisex Crochet Baby Blanket

Finding out that there’s going to be a new baby coming soon is one of life’s most exciting moments. If you’re like me, you cannot wait to get started on a new baby blanket for the baby-to-be.

Gender neutral crochet baby blanket pattern

With this gender neutral crochet baby blanket pattern, you don’t need to wait for the gender reveal – you can get crocheting right away as this baby blanket is perfect for a baby boy or a baby girl!

Crochet Baby Blanket Gender Neutral

This unisex baby blanket crochet pattern is an easy-to-follow pattern that includes step-by-step instructions, a chart and a video tutorial. It’s a classic yet modern unisex baby blanket that looks a little like a knit blanket but takes much less time to make!

You can use any color and any size 3 yarn. It’s a light yet cozy blanket that’s airy but doesn’t have any big holes for a baby’s fingers to get caught in.

The blanket is reversible – the back looks just like the front except there are no bobbles. The pattern has a built-in border so you don’t need to add a border after the blanket is finished.

Unisex baby blanket crochet pattern

This crochet baby blanket is approx. 30″ wide and 38″ high, which is the perfect size for a newborn baby blanket. The pattern also includes for how to adjust the size.

Pattern Details (Size, Yarn, Hook & Notes)

Skill Level

Easy

Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 30” wide x 38” high. Instructions for adjusting the size are included at the end of the pattern.

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 1,200 yds of any size 3 (light) yarn. I used Bernat Softee Baby in the color “Flannel” (some pictures show the blanket in “Lemon”). This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 362 yds / 331 m and 5 oz / 140 g. I used 4 skeins (3 and 1/4 exactly).

Crochet Hook: J / 10 (6.00 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. Optional: stitch markers (approx. 6) and materials for wet blocking the finished blanket (rust-proof pins, blocking boards and a spray water bottle).

Terminology

This gender neutral crochet baby blanket pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • RS = right side (front of blanket)
  • WS = wrong side (back of blanket)

Gauge

4” x 4” = 14 sc and 16 rows (swatch made with only single crochet stitches).

Gender neutral crochet baby blanket pattern

Pattern Notes

  • Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain). If the instructions for the row begin with “in the next st” that means to work into the 1st stitch.
  • Chains do not count as stitches.
  • Every row has 101 stitches.
  • When making a slip stitch, make the slip stitch VERY loosely to ensure you can work into it easily on the next row.
  • When the instructions say: “[Sl st in the next st. Hdc in the next st] x 3” what this means is to repeat the instructions in the brackets a total of 3 times so in this example it would be: sl st in the next st, hdc in the next st, sl st in the next st, hdc in the next st, sl st in the next st, hdc in the next st.
  • You can use stitch markers to help keep track of where you are in the row.
  • Wet blocking the finished blanket will help with any unevenness you may see when creating the blanket as the single crochet stitches need to stretch a bit, which happens during blocking. To wet block, pin down the blanket on blocking boards, spray with water and leave to dry.

Special Stitches

Bobble = Make 3 double crochet stitches together in the same stitch.

Here’s how: yarn over and insert your hook into the designated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (2 loops left on hook). Yarn over and insert your hook into the same designated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops left on hook). Yarn over and insert your hook into the same designated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (4 loops left on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through all 4 loops on your hook.

Pattern Chart

Pattern chart

Read the chart from right to left on RS rows and left to right on WS rows. The chart is lightly shaded on WS rows.

Chart Legend

• = Slip stitch

T = Half double crochet

X = Single crochet

Bobble

= Bobble

The pattern is:

  • Start – Row 46
  • Row 7 – 46
  • Row 7 – 46
  • Row 7 – 26

How to Adjust the Size

To adjust the width of the blanket, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 38 + 26 (take any number that you can divide by 38 and then add 26 to that number).

Adjust Size Chart

To adjust the height, repeat Rows 7 – 46 as many times as you would like. To finish the blanket, repeat Rows 7 – 26.

Rows 7, 8, 12, 14, 32 and 34 in the written instructions explain each stitch in the row without instructions for how to adjust the size. I’ve rewritten the instructions for those rows and included them below. All other rows in the pattern (not mentioned here) can be followed exactly.
