Pattern Details (Size, Yarn, Hook & Notes)

Skill Level

Easy

Size

The pattern creates a jar cover that is approx. 5โ€ wide (when folded) and 3โ€ high from the bottom. It is designed to fit a pint-size (16 oz / 2 cup) Mason jar that is 10โ€ around, 4.75โ€ high, 3.25โ€ wide across the top and 2.75โ€ wide across the bottom.

Jar Cover Size

Materials

Yarn: you can use any size 4 (medium) yarn.

You will need approx. 40 yds in total (12 yds for the bottom and 3.5 yds for each round of the body).

I used Impeccable by Loops & Threads and Bernat Super Value in various colors. These are both size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic.

Crochet Hook Size: I/9 (5.50 mm)

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, hereโ€™s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Crochet Jar Cover

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sk = skip
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • RS = Right Side (outside)
  • WS = Wrong Side (inside)

Gauge

2โ€ x 2โ€ = 6 sts and 6 rounds following body pattern.

Changing Colors

The pattern does not include directions for where to change colors because there are so many possibilities. You can make the jar cover in one solid color or use any number of colors. Iโ€™ve included some ideas of where to change colors but the possibilities are truly endless and I would love to see what you come up with!

Change colors after finishing a round by placing the new color on your hook and pulling the new color through the loop of your current color. Begin the next round with your new color.

You can either fasten off after each color change if you want your jar cover to be reversible or if you donโ€™t need it to be reversible, you can keep the unused color hanging along the inside (Wrong Side) of your work and pick it back up when you need it again.
