Chunky Crochet Scarf

This free chunky scarf crochet pattern is a very easy, beginner-friendly pattern that uses only one skein of chunky yarn and is made from a simple one-stitch repeat, using only basic stitches (single and double crochet stitches). It is very quick to make and you can complete this scarf in under 3 hours (approx.).

I recommend using Bernat Velvet yarn, which is an absolute delight to work with. The softness of this yarn running through your hands as you make it is heavenly.

This yarn creates a scarf that is light but still warm and cozy. The texture of the stitches makes it look classic and modern at the same time. I don’t think the pictures do this pattern justice and they definitely don’t convey how silky and smooth the scarf actually is!

Size

The pattern creates a scarf that is approx. 6.5” wide and 77” long (without the tassels).

Gauge

4” x 4” = 10 sts and 9 rows (following the pattern) 

Materials

Yarn: 1 skein of Bernat Velvet in the color Smokey Blue. This yarn is size 5 (bulky) and 100% polyester. A skein is 315 yds / 288 m and 300 g / 10.5 oz. You can substitute with similar size 5 yarn. You will need approx. 285 yds. 

Can you use size 6 (super bulky)?

This pattern was designed to be made with size 5 yarn but you are welcome to try it with size 6 yarn. The overall look, finished size and amount of yarn required may be slightly different.

Crochet Hook Size: K/10.5 (6.50mm) 

Other: yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. Optional: a 5” object (piece of thick cardboard or a notebook) to help cut strands for the tassels. 

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology.

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• st = stitch
• sts = stitches

• WS = wrong side / back 

How to Adjust the Size

The scarf is worked from the long side up meaning your chain row will determine the scarf’s length. To adjust the length, make less or more starting chains in multiples of 2 + 2. To adjust the width, make less or more rows.

How to Crochet the Chunky Scarf (Pattern Instructions)

Scarf Instructions

Start: Chain 178 (for a scarf that is approx. 77” or however long you would like the scarf to be in multiples of 2 + 2).

Row 1 (RS): In the 2nd ch from hook, sc. Dc in the same ch. Sk the next ch. *(Sc, dc) in the next ch. Sk the next ch.* Repeat from * to * across until there is 1 chain left (after your last skipped st). In the last ch, sc. (177 sts – chains never count as sts). 

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 and turn. (Sc, dc) in the 1st st (the top of the sc the previous row). Sk the next st (the top of the dc from the previous row). *(Sc, dc) in the next st (the top of the sc from the previous row). Sk the next st (the top of the dc from the previous row).* Repeat from * to * across until there is 1 st left (after your last skipped st). In the last st, sc. (177 sts). 

Row 3 and on: Repeat Row 2 until your work measures 6.5” (approx. 14 rows) or your desired scarf width. 

End after a WS row (so you will have an even number of rows). 

Fasten off and weave in loose ends. 

Adding Tassels / Fringe

You will attach tassels to the left and right sides with the RS facing up. Place one tassel between two rows, spaced evenly apart.

Each tassel has 2 strands of yarn. For 14 rows, make 7 tassels for each side (or your number of rows, divided by 2). Note: You may find you need less or more depending on how they are spaced. Just ensure even spacing between. 

You will need 28 x 10” strands of yarn for the tassels (for tassels that are approx 3.5” long). To make the tassels shorter or longer, cut smaller or bigger strands. 

Tip for cutting the the strands: find an object that is 5” wide (a piece of cardboard, a notebook, etc). Wrap your yarn around the 5” object 28 times. Cut the yarn in half. 

Attaching the Tassels

A) Take two strands of yarn, fold them in half and with your hook, pull the folded ends through the stitch (which creates a loop).

B) Pull the ends through the loop. 

C) Pull tight to make a knot. 

Repeat for each tassel.
