Blissful Crochet Baby Blanket

Blissful is defined as being extremely happy and full of joy, which is the perfect word to describe this easy baby blanket crochet pattern.

This pattern is an absolute delight to crochet as it’s incredibly simple. It might be my easiest baby blanket pattern ever! Yet the result is stunning.

Blissful Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

The elation felt when making this blanket is just the start. Wait until you see your new bundle of joy wrapped snuggly in this soft, warm, yet lightweight, gorgeous blanket.

It’s an ideal newborn baby blanket as there are no holes or gaps for a baby’s fingers to get caught in. The blanket size is spot on for a brand-new baby (although you can easily adjust the size – instructions are included in the pattern).

Blissful Easy Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

The blanket’s subtle beauty makes it perfect for any gender baby. The slight texture of the blanket body is intricate for a baby girl yet still modest for a baby boy. Plus, there is a lovely complimentary and sophisticated (but VERY easy to make) border that is universally radiant and equally suited for any gender.

It’s hard to believe that this entire blanket is made with only single crochet and double crochet stitches! It’s a wonderful one-row repeat crochet baby blanket pattern for beginners or experienced crocheters looking for a relaxing pattern without any guesswork involved.

Pattern Details

Skill Level

Easy and beginner-friendly

Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 33” x 33”.

Materials

Yarn: Any size 3 (light) yarn. You will need approx. 1,200 yds in total.

I used Baby Cuddles by Loops & Threads in the color “White.” This yarn is size 3 (light), 70% acrylic and 30% polyamide. A skein is 315 yds / 288 m and 4 oz / 113 g. I used four skeins in total (approx. 1,000 yds for the blanket body and 200 yds for the blanket border).

Crochet Hook Size: I/9 (5.50 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sk = skip
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet

Gauge

Exact sizing is not important. For reference, 4” x 4” = 15 sts and 12 rows following the blanket body pattern.

Pattern Notes

  • Chains never count as stitches.

How to Adjust the Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 33” x 33” with the border (30” x 30” without the border).

The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 3 + 2 (meaning to take any number that you can divide by 3 and add 2 to that number i.e. 90 + 2 = 92 starting chains required). To adjust the height, make more or less rows.

Work in progress

As a guideline: 115 sts = 30“ wide, which means there are approx. 3.8 stitches in an inch. You can take the width you want your blanket to be (in inches) and multiply it by 3.8. For example, if you want your blanket to be approx. 100” wide, 100 x 3.8 = 380. Round up to the nearest multiple of 3. In this example, you would round up to 381. Then add 2 to that number (381 + 2 = 383). So, you would need 383 starting chains to make the blanket approx. 100” wide. (This is a rough estimate and has not been tested but should give you a width that is close to what you want it to be).

How to Crochet the Blissful Baby Blanket

Blanket Body Instructions

Start: Ch 116.

For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops.

Where to crochet in the chain

Row 1: In the second ch from the hook, sc.

Sc in each ch across. (115 sc sts).

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn.

In the first st (the st attached to the ch), make (sc, 2 dc) in the same st.

*Sk the next 2 sts.

In the next st, make (sc, 2 dc) in the same st.*

Repeat from * to * across until there are 3 sts left.

Sk the next 2 sts.

In the last st, sc.

(115 sts. Reminder: chs never count as sts).

Row 2

Row 3 and on: Repeat Row 2 until the height of your blanket body matches the width (for a square blanket) or your desired height. My blanket body measured 30” high, which was 90 rows.

Row 3 and On

You can end after any row. After reaching your desired height, do not fasten off. Begin the blanket border.

Work in Progress

Blanket Border Instructions

Border Round 1: Ch 1. Do not turn.

SIDE (DOWN) – Sc evenly down the side.

Exact st placement and exact number of sts are not important. The goal is to have evenly-spaced sc sts down (and up) the side. Work into sts at the end of the row – you can work under 1 loop or 2 or into spaces around the sts. I made 1 sc at the end of every row. My blanket body had 90 rows and I made approx. 90 sc sts down (and 90 sc sts up) the side. You can make more or less sc sts. Try to have the same number on both sides.

BOTTOM – In the first ch across the bottom, make 3 sc in the same ch (first corner made).

Sc in each ch across the bottom until there is 1 ch left.

In the last ch, make 3 sc in the same ch (second corner made).

SIDE (UP) – Sc evenly up the side (same as working down the side).

TOP – In the first st across the top, make 3 sc in the same st (third corner made).

Sc in each st across the top until there is 1 st left.

In the last st, make 3 sc in the same st (fourth corner made).

Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.

Border Round 2: Ch 1 and turn.

Sk the first st (the st attached to the ch).

Sc in each st around except at the corners.

At each corner (the middle of the 3 sc sts made in the previous round), make 3 sc in the same st.

Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.

Border Rounds 3 & 4: Repeat Border Round 2.

Border Round 5: Ch 2 and turn.

Sk the first st (the st attached to the chs).

Dc in each st around except at the corners.

At each corner (the middle of the 3 sc sts made in the previous round), make 5 dc in the same st.

Sl st into the top of the first dc made in the round to join.

Border Round 6: Ch 1 and turn.

Sk the first st (the st attached to the ch).

In the next st, (sc, dc) in the same st.

*Sk the next st. In the next st, (sc, dc) in the same st.* Repeat from * to * around.

(Nothing special happens at the corners. If you find your corners are curling, you can not skip a st as you work around the corners).

Your last st in the round should be a (sc, dc) in the last st. If you don’t have the right number of sts to make that work, don’t sk a st before the last st. If you find that too bulky, you can make only a sc or only a dc in the last st.

Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
